DNA Workshop Requirements

To enroll in a DNA Workshop, you must be registered for at least one day of Jamboree OR the Genetic Genealogy conference OR the Family History Writers conference. You may only sign up for ONE Workshop. All workshops rooms are set up classroom style with tables and chairs.  All have electrical hook-ups for laptops and tablets.  Here the the link to print this page: 2018 Workshop Requirements.pdf

DNA01   Comparing Testing Companies and Understanding DNA Tests (Level: Beg)

Learn the differences of each major DNA testing company.  Once you have tested, discover what you can do before contacting your matches to assist you in finding the common ancestor you share with your match. Know what to do when your matches contact you first, and the steps to follow when contacting your matches.  Laptops/tablets will be useful in this workshop. Bring copies of your DNA testing results from 23andMe, Ancestry, and/or Family Tree DNA to the workshop if you wish.

DNA02   Getting Started with Genome Mate Pro (Level: Int., Adv)

Genome Mate Pro (www.getgmp.com) is a donation-supported, stand-alone computer program for PC, Mac and Linux that greatly eases autosomal DNA research. This workshop will cover: managing tests for multiple family members; adding gedcoms; importing data from GEDmatch, AncestryDNA, 23andMe, and FTDNA; chromosome mapping; and triangulation and ICW grouping.

Instructions from Dr. Larkin. For this workshop, you must have a laptop that you are comfortable and that can access the internet. Genome Mate Pro requires a substantial up-front investment to import data. To allow more time for working with the data (as opposed to importing it), I ask that all participants do the following before the workshop:

  1. If you have not already done so, test yourself and/or at least one family member with an autosomal DNA test at AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, and/or Family Tree DNA (Family Finder test). Tests done at 23andMe prior to August 2017 are also fine. If you did one of those tests but not FTDNA's Family Finder, also transfer the raw data to FTDNA and pay the fee ($19) to "unlock" the matches. If you plan to add new tests for yourself or your family members before the workshop, send the test back to the lab at least 8 weeks ahead.
  2. Create an account at GEDMatch (www.gedmatch.com) and upload the raw data from your DNA test. If you have tested other family members, you can upload their data to GEDmatch (with their consent) as well. Do this at least one week before the workshop. Once the kit has processed, subscribe to the Tier 1 tools ($10 for one month of access).
  3. Download and install the Genome Mate Pro program on the laptop you will use during the workshop. Also download the GMP User Guide. The program is free and comes in versions for WIndows, Mac, and Linux. You can get the program and User Guide at https://www.getgmp.com/download.
  4. Create an account at DNAGedcom (www.dnagedcom.com). Log into the account, go to Members: Subscriber Information, and subscribe ($5 for one month). Reload the Subscriber Page, and download the DNAGedcom Client for your operating system (Windows or Mac).
  5. Download and install the Chrome internet browser on your laptop (https://www.google.com/chrome/).
  6. Check your email in the weeks prior to the workshop. I will follow up with each of you to make sure you've successfully completed Requirements 1–5 and to share any updated instructions.

DNA03   Visual Phasing Workshop (Level: Int, Adv)

A hands-on workshop that will introduce attendees to the fundamentals of visual phasing, which is the use of results from three or more siblings to map DNA to the sibling’s grandparents. For more about visual phasing, see: https://isogg.org/wiki/Visual_phasing. After going over the basics of visual phasing, attendees will try their hand at examples before going step-by-step through their own results. A working laptop is ESSENTIAL for this workshop, as Dr. Bettinger will ask you to periodically complete tasks on your computer.

Instructions from Dr. Bettinger. To maximize the use of everyone's time for this workshop I request that everyone do the following prior to the workshop:

  1. Test a set of three or more siblings at 23andMe, AncestryDNA, Family Tree DNA, and/or MyHeritage. For ease of comparisons, recent tests (taken from June 2017 to the present) at 23andMe are not recommended.
  2. Create an account at GEDmatch (www.gedmatch.com) and upload one raw data file from a testing company for EACH of the three or more siblings. When finished with this step, you’ll have data for all three siblings at GEDmatch before the workshop.
  3. Download and review the 5-part series on Visual Phasing. You do NOT need to print this out or bring it with you, but it will be very helpful to review this document prior to the workshop.

If you want to take full advantage of this workshop, you must have data for at least three full siblings uploaded to GEDmatch prior to the workshop. You will still learn a great deal if you don’t have a set of siblings, or you have less than three full siblings (such as one test-taker with two half-siblings, or two siblings with a third half-sibling).

However, by signing up for the workshop with less than three full siblings, you understand that you will not have your own data to work on during the portion of the workshop in which attendees work with their own data, which could be up to a third of the workshop.

DNA04   Autosomal DNA Chromosome Mapping Workshop (Level: Adv)

This workshop will review chromosome mapping techniques including the following:  basic chromosome mapping, inverse chromosome mapping, extension of mapped DNA regions, mapping DNA segments to populations or geographical locations, and visual phasing using 23andMe, GEDmatch, and David Pike’s Shared DNA Segments utility.  Discussion of some phasing tools will also be included.  Participants may begin or continue the process of mapping their DNA.  Participants need to bring laptops to the workshop loaded with Excel or other spreadsheet program

Instructions from Dr. Janzen. I realize that the attendees at this workshop will have varying amounts of data that they can accurately map. In order to maximize the use of everyone's time for this workshop I would suggest that everyone do the following if at all feasible prior to the workshop:

  1. Test at least one of your parents or one of your children (in addition to yourself) with an autosomal test if at all possible. Testing at 23andMe, with Family Tree DNA's Family Finder test, and/or with MyHeritage are preferable to Ancestry.com's AncestryDNA test for the purposes of this workshop.
  2. Upload at least one raw data file from 23andMe, Family Finder, Ancestry.com's test, MyHeritage, or Living DNA to GEDmatch for yourself and for a parent or child (assuming that they are available for testing). If you have tested other known relatives, then also upload their data to GEDmatch, particularly if they have only tested at Ancestry.com.
  3. Download your aggregate matching segment data from Family Finder from the chromosome browser feature as well as from 23andMe's DNA comparison tool within 3 to 4 days prior to the workshop. Also do this for any parents or children that you have tested.
  4. Contact all of your closest matches at 23andMe, in Family Finder, at Ancestry.com and at MyHeritage and encourage them to upload their raw data files to GEDmatch.
  5. Make at least a $10 donation to GEDmatch prior to the workshop so that you are able to be a Tier 1 member there prior to the workshop. Then download your matching segment file from GEDmatch using the Tier 1 utility "Matching Segment Search." I suggest you use a 7 cM/500 SNP threshold for this download. Also do this for any parents or children that you have tested.
  6. If you aren't already familiar with the program Excel, become familiar with the basic features of that program prior to the workshop and have it installed on your laptop or tablet. Other spreadsheet programs that can handle CSV files are also reasonable to use if you would prefer to use a different program other than Excel.
  7. If you have tested at 23andMe,I suggest you contact as many of your matches in DNA Relatives as feasible prior to the workshop and send them an invitation to share ancestry reports with you if they haven’t already opted into open sharing.
  8. you have tested three siblings at 23andMe or have uploaded the raw data files from 3 siblings into GEDmatch, then bring the matching segment data for the shared half-identical regions and fully-identical regions for the siblings with you to the workshop if you are interested in starting the process of visual phasing.
  9. Bring all of the appropriate downloaded spreadsheets referred to above with you to the workshop. Also bring the passwords to accounts of any of the relatives you have tested.

Those of you who don't have very much data to map can work on creating consolidated matching segment data files if you haven't already created them. I will try to give as much individual help as feasible during the workshop.  The amount of time you will have available for doing your own chromosome mapping or visual phasing will depend on how much free time is left over after we have collectively gone through the didactic portion of the workshop.
